While exploring the Maple Sugar Shacks in Cumberla

While exploring the Maple Sugar Shacks in Cumberland County, Nova Scotia I stayed at the @temple.of.eden.domes in Fenwick (just outside of Amherst) located just minutes from Maple Sugar Lane.

This dome was so lovely to stay in and it was my first time using a wood fired hot tub! Open year round they are just another one of the great unique accommodations that Nova Scotia has to offer.

There are three domes on site and they stand out compared to others with their stone accents, built on screened in patio, wood fired hot tub and hammock! They are a little close to the highway though so light sleepers bring ear plugs and ladies bring a hair dryer. Having only been opened a year they are great and will be going through reno’s soon to make them even better!!

The kitchenette includes an air fryer / toaster oven, induction burner and small mini fridge. There is also a bbq outside. Or you can make the quick drive to downtown @amherst_ns for some great food options!

Follow me on my adventure at the Sugar Shacks on Maple Sugar Lane in Cumberland County, NS!

Last week I had the chance to visit @thompsonsmaplebud and Ripley’s
Sugarwoods. Both of their Sugar Shacks are lovely places to visit especially right now as the maple sap is flowing and they are busy producing delicious Maple syrup, maple cream and maple butter!

It’s free to visit and they love to talk with you about the whole maple syrup making process from sap to bottle. While there I got to try it in various forms and processes from water all the way to sugar. It was also cool to learn that Cumberland County makes over 70% of the provinces maple syrup AND that it takes 40L of sap to make 1L of syrup!

Both syrup producers also sell their products on site, cash only. I LOADED up on maple syrup buying a few litres along with some maple cream and maple butter. Yum!!

This past week I explored some Maple Sugar Shacks

This past week I explored some Maple Sugar Shacks in Cumberland County, NS!

There are at least 10 Maple Syrup producers in @explorecumberland that make over 70% of Nova Scotia’s Maple Syrup. I followed the Maple Trail map and visited a few to learn all about how they make maple syrup, maple cream and maple butter!

First stop was to Maple Sugar Lane to visit @thompsonsmaplebud and Ripley’s Sugar woods. (You can also visit Donkin’s Maple Sugar Woods but I ran out of time!) It is free to visit all 3 sugar shacks and they are more than happy to talk to you about the maple syrup making process, maple cream, butter and more!

I also had the chance to drink maple sap straight from the tree as well as the water they remove from it with an RO system. So delicious!

They all sell their maple syrup, cream and butter to you right there CASH ONLY. Ripley’s turns their maple cream into blocks, leaves that are also coated in syrup, and big bunnies for Easter. Thompson’s sells leaves, smaller bunnies and tiny maple cream ice cream cones. They also sometimes have maple syrup aged in bourbon or rum barrels! Yum!! At Donkins they also make their own maple BBQ sauce!! They are each unique in their own ways.

The maple syrup producers begin taping their trees at the end of February and the sap runs in March and early April meaning right NOW is the best time to visit!!

Next I headed south to the Leamington area where some of the larger commercial producers are like McCormicks Maple Syrup Supplies, and @kdhuntermaple. It was a cleaning day for KD but they graciously welcomed me for a visit to see their set up and learn about the history of their sugar woods. They sell a majority of their syrup overseas which is very cool and in high demand! (Contact them in advance if you want to visit.)

Lastly I stopped into @hiddenmountainmaplefarms a family run property with their sugar shack being right in their house! They are also the only producers that I met that sell maple suckers and maple jam!

I only spent a day exploring the sugar shacks but I already want to go back!

A lovely, calm afternoon VS the craziness of Irish pubs and downtown bars in Halifax today 😂💚🍀

Propeller is one of the oldest craft beer brewers in the province (we now have over 56!!) and they have a few great locations you can visit and a beer bar arcade! Be sure to check them out! Cheers! 💚🍺

Visit one of the newest tiny home properties in No

Visit one of the newest tiny home properties in Nova Scotia with me!

This is the Watervale Springs Retreat @wvsretreat in Salt Springs, Nova Scotia (Pictou County). Opened in November 2024 they have 3 tiny homes on property. Cabins 1 & 3 sleep two people each in comfy King beds and Cabin 2 sleeps up to four having a King bed and Murphy bed.

Each tiny home has its own BBQ, fire table, and private deck. Inside they have kitchenettes with an air fryer and induction cooktop as well as a coffee and tea bar and full sized bathrooms.

Located in the woods far from the hustle and bustle of everyday life it is a gorgeous place to relax and disconnect. There is however wifi and tv though of course. When staying here you can opt for add on packages which can include breakfast items, a movie night package with popcorn, drinks and snacks and even a charcuterie package.

Nearby there are several farm stands and convenience stores or New Glasgow and Stellarton are just 20mins away by car. There you can find all major grocery stores, pharmacies and great restaurants like @shoeboxcantina and @bluelobsterpublichouse as well as the @ngfarmmarket.

For the summer months the tiny homes are only about 30-35 min from Pictou and Melmerby beach, the warmest beach in Nova Scotia. They are also just as close to the ferry terminal to PEI which makes them a great place to stay before or after visiting the island.

Be sure to check them out this spring or summer for a wonderful getaway or staycation!

These tiny homes are for adults only, no pets and currently do not have hot tubs.

This is the Watervale Springs Retreat @wvsretreat in Salt Springs, Nova Scotia. They have three gorgeous tiny homes on property that just opened in November 2024! They have two tiny homes that sleep 2 with one king bed each and one that sleeps 4 with a Kind bed and Murphy bed.

The tiny homes have a small kitchenette and BBQs, full sized bathrooms, wifi, flat screen tvs and more. (No hot tubs, adults only.)

If you are looking for a great getaway in Nova Scotia in the woods or a place to disconnect this is it. There are a few great country markets nearby and you are only 20min to the @bluelobsterpublichouse or 25 min to New Glasgow and spots like @shoeboxcantina and the @ngfarmmarket. Or a 30 min drive to Melmerby beach the warmest beach in Nova Scotia and just 30 min to the PEI Ferry @nflbayferries
